A few of the parents and other members of our Karate community have expressed interest in self-defence instruction, and while we currently have a self-defence class running on Tuesdays from 6:30pm-7:30pm at the Ashburton dojo, people have been inquiring about other possible times.

I am looking at running a Women’s Self-Defence course beginning in April. The course will run for 6 weeks, with classes during the day from 11:00am-12:30pm at the Ashburton dojo (I am currently considering Tuesdays and Thursdays).
As this course won’t be focused on traditional Karate, there will be no uniform requirements (loose fitting gym gear works well); nor will there be any bowing or other formalities – all you have to do is turn up and train. Also, this course is open to everyone, regardless of whether you’re a member of the dojo, so if you have a friend who may be interested feel free to bring them along!
The following is a brief summary of some of the things we’ll be covering:
- the realities of anger, aggression and violence, and your role in protecting yourself
- de-escalating and/or negotiating with an enemy to prevent physical violence from taking place
- how to strike hard using natural, gross motor skills
- how to use the body’s instinctive, hard-wired responses to protect your head and vitals (no special, complex techniques)
- how to use the voice in self-protection
- how to engage in close-quarter combat and escape
- basic methods of protecting others
The classes will be physical of course, but do not require any sort of athleticism.
My goal is to teach the average person how to protect themselves and their loved ones against real violence through no-nonsense training.
